Hardness is one of the most commonly specified properties of rubber sheets,yet it is also one of the most misunderstood.Shore A hardness measures a material’s resistance to indentation.A lower number means softer,more flexible,and better conformability.A higher number means harder,more resistant to compression,and better for load-bearing.
But the number alone does not tell you everything.Two sheets both marked“Shore A 60”can behave differently under compression,depending on the compound and the vulcanisation state.That is why hardness tolerance matters—a supplier holding±3 Shore A is working with tighter process control than one allowing±5 or±10.

For practical selection:
Shore A 40–50:soft,high conformability—good for delicate sealing and vibration damping.
Shore A 60–70:general purpose—the most common range for gaskets,pads,and general industrial sheets.
Shore A 80–90:hard,wear-resistant—suitable for load-bearing pads,abrasion-resistant linings,and structural applications.
For buyers,it is worth asking:what is the hardness tolerance?How is it tested—on the sheet surface or on a pressed test piece?And does the hardness remain stable after aging?
